Stage6/DivX isn't owned by Scientologists it is owned by Jews and Christians actually, also Stage6/DivX did NOT blame the group "Anonymous" for the hack they didn't blame anyone infact they didn't even admit they had been hacked! All they said was "Unforseen technical issues" the blame was passed onto ebaumsworld (Because that was the site S6 main page forwarded you to) and 4chan which are NOT anti-scientology. As for the hack being so close to the closure of Stage6 thats just coincidental because if you look at the timelines of announcements on the DivX website they were in court with UMG for over a year waiting to be sued $30million, they were desperately trying to sell Stage6 for 8mths prior to the closure but nobody would buy until the court case with UMG was settled. They were also already in talks with Veoh since late December early January about a merger. Amongst many other things that lead to its demise.

Man that was an intellegent assessment, and nicely written.... thank you OroMatoko

I have little idea what happened but of all the explanations I have heard, that one is best for me.

I have seen the 4chan pages (I think Kate or some nice friend posted the link on S6) http://users.skynet.be/fa564557/stage6hack/#53391224

The comments are very 'eye-opening'.

On Feb. 9th, 2008, the Home page of Stage6.com got 'haxxed' by some of the 'Anonymous' wannabe haxxorz @ 4chan that downloaded a 'leaked' phishing text file containing some user names and passwords @ Stage6 - including one Adminz password, that allowed a few kidz to jerk around people visiting the main Home page @ Stage6 - by redirecting them (via a few meta-refresh trixx) to 'other' sites (including their own! - lol). After about two and a half hours of playing little 'haxxorz', someone finally on the Stage6 crew put up a 'maintenance notice' that effectively shut down all user up/down loading services @ Stage6 for several days. It was during that maintenance\shutdown period (I believe) corporate 'leaker(z)' @ DivX began transferring the content database of Stage6 to their 'new' partnerz @ Veoh.com!

I also believe nobody 'really' hacked into any user\password account db @ Stage6. It looks more like someone implemented a XSS - phishing - social engineering trick - and created a fake login screen and then collected the passwords of those who fell for it! . . .along with at least one Adminz password! This probably went on for quite awhile, which would explain the size of the 'leaked' x=pos\phishing file and explain why the passwords weren't encrypted, as well as why there are so many repeated passwords only a few seconds apart in the list – from members trying repeatedly to login - via the fake login page!! Most members bypassing Stage6's Home page that day never even knew what was going on!

. . .and what makes the timing of that 'leak' to the 4chan clan "DO THE IMPOSSIBLE - LEAK THE UNLEAKABLE" haxx-out so fitting - is the fact that just a few days before that 'hackass phishing exposition' - DivX had just suffered it's first major setback in their copyright dispute with Universal Music Group - when Judge Dana Sabraw dismissed DivX's request to declare Stage6 legal!
. . . and with DivX facing a 'piracy trial' now with UMG!

That's why I think DivX panicked, fearing the worse and decided to off-load Stage6's database to Veoh, using all the bandwidth they needed - during the down 'maintenance' time - to do it!!

And there it is

Translated, that may be that the pirates took over the site. New movies and tv shows were constantly being uploaded and then taken down by the site staff. Sites like Joox.net took all that pirated content and repackaged it on their own site. The combined costs of hosting, plus all the monitoring for infringement, may have been more than Divx was willing to deal with.

Update: Ok, we’ve been shaking the trees on this story a little. According to one source, the planned spinoff of Stage6 from DivX apparently had $24 million or so in committed venture capital but negotiations with the DivX board broke down over ownership percentages. We’re still digging.

Update2: Comscore says Stage6 has 17.4 million monthly unique visitors and 360 million page views. We also hear that their monthly CDN bill from LimeLight is $1 million, about 11% of their revenues. That’s going to hurt them.

I posted this as part of a conversation in another Topic area, but based on what I read, this is most likely the reason the site shut down now instead of later. Limelight already had a heads up on this, so I'm sure their clients had some fore-knowledge. And for the uniformed, Limelight handled some of the Server space, and all the Streaming for Stage6

Limelight Networks Announces Verdict in Patent Trial

TEMPE Ariz., Feb. 29, 2008 - Limelight Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: LLNW) today announced that the jury in the case Akamai Technologies, Inc. et al. v. Limelight Networks (United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts) announced a verdict in favor of Akamai Technologies.

"We are disappointed with the jury's verdict in this matter. We strongly believe that, like other companies that follow long-established Internet standards, we do not infringe the patent in this case. We will continue to remain a competitive choice in the marketplace as we pursue all appropriate legal avenues," stated Phil Maynard, chief legal counsel, Limelight Networks, Inc.

The verdict found that Limelight infringed certain claims of U.S. Patent No. 6,108,703 and rejected Limelight's invalidity defenses. The jury awarded Akamai damages of $45,524,946, plus prejudgment interest.

This is a medium upstart company. It would mean a probable shut down, or at least hurt quite a bit. It would also mean that their clients would have to seriously consider other options fast, and that would involve capitol to which Stage6 most likely did not have readily available.
So I don't think the Scientologists or anyone had much to do with Stage6's shutdown. I think it was most likely money.

As per some of my posts, I am all for conspiracy theories about rotten Divx, but claiming they were actually The Church of Non-Science (pronounced, Nonsense biggrin.gif) in disguise is a tad too much of a stretch for me. I hate them more than I hate Divx but I won't pin the diabolical Stage6 sham on them. Besides, surely if the Sci-Freaks were behind it, Tom Cruise would have been jumping on someone's couch about it by now. laugh.gif

Personally I think that cademotest was behind the Stage6 hack. I also believe that he is responsible for September 11th, and assassinated J.F.K.

I don't know about this boycott thing. They typically don't work, and annoy the heck out of everyone. I personally want Stage6 back, and will do whatever it takes to try and make it happen. Remember, they tried to boycott Grapes for years, and it didn't work. Lets come up with something else that will get results. Remember we liked the product before the shut down, and it wasn't everyones fault at DivX either. Some conspiracies have merit, but most are a waste of time and collapse under they're own weight. Save it for the Trilateralists. Fircken Bankers anyways.
